El Salvador is one of the 5 countries that make Central America. It is the smallest of the five and because of this, it is affectionately called the "Tom Thumb of the Americas" ("Pulgarcito de America").

Land Size: It has a total area of 8,123 square miles (21,040 km²). It is about the size of New Jersey. It has 123.6 square miles (320 km²) of water within its borders

Borders: Guatemala, Honduras, and the pacific ocean
Land Divisions: Called departments (Departamentos) - Ahuachapan, Cabañas, Chalatenango, Cuscatlan, La Libertad, La Paz, La Union, Morazan, San Miguel, San Salvador, San Vicente, Santa Ana, Sonsonate, and Usulutan.
